A political speaker has urged the Sri Lankan government, led by President Anura Kumara Dissanayake, to reconsider its proposed 22nd Constitutional Amendment, alleging that the move could undermine democratic governance and the independence of the judiciary.

The speaker claimed that concerns had been raised both locally and internationally about the proposed amendment. They also alleged that the government had failed to give adequate consideration to a letter submitted by the Mahanayake Theros expressing concerns about the matter.

According to the speaker, the government was attempting to advance the amendment by exploiting perceived gaps in the existing Constitution. They argued that the proposed changes could weaken the country's constitutional framework rather than strengthen democratic institutions.
